高校生の時、近所の方に頼まれて、小学生の勉強を見たことがありました。

When I was a high-school student, I was asked by neighbors and I taught the boy.

やる気のない子どもでしたが、何より「勉強が嫌い」であることが明白でした。

He had no motivation to study, and obviously he dislike studying.

私が「将来、何になりたいのか」、と尋ねたところ、彼は、ポツリと

「普通のサラリーマン」

"Ordinary salaried worker"

と、答えました。

『ああ、この子は、"普通のサラリーマン"という職業が存在していると信じているんだなぁ』

"Oh, this child believes that "ordinary salaried workers" have existed."

と思ったのを覚えています。

そして『気の毒に』とも。

I also feel sorry for him.

しかし、彼に(そして、多くの若者に)、この"普通のサラリーマン"という概念を教えたのは、一体、どこの誰なのだろう？

By the way, who taught him (and many younger) about "ordinary salaried workers" on earth ?

"普通のサラリーマン"というのは、「これといった努力もなく、上から言われたことをやっているだけで、一生食べていける」という概念なのだろうと思います。

"Ordinary salaried workers" is, I think, "we can eat all my life, just doing something from the top with no effort"
