当時、東京ー大阪は、最速の急行列車で12時間かかっていました。

Tokyo - Osaka took 12 hours in the fastest express train in those days.

当時の、新聞の読者欄には、

In the reader's column of the then newspaper,

「東京―大阪の間を、わずか４時間弱で移動する必要が一体どこにある。新幹線などは、無用の長物である」

"Who needs the mobility that can move just four hours between Tokyo and Osaka? The Shinkansen is a useless thing."

と記載されていたそうです。

「早く移動することに、何の価値があるか？」の理屈は、いつの時代にも、どこの場所でもあったようです。

There has been opinions of "what the value of moving so fast?" everywhere every time.

19世紀末の英国の学会では、「人間は、時速37Ｋｍ以上で移動すると、早死にする」という報告がされ、自動車の存在が否定される論文が提出されているそうです。

In the British an academic society of the end of 19th century, I heard that the paper was published that "If the human being moves more than 37km per an hour, they will die soon"
