以前、「ほこたて」というバラエティ番組がありました。

The other day, there is a TV variety show, whose name is "Hoko-Tate".

「ほこたて」とは、「矛盾」という熟語を、訓読みしたものです。

"Hoko-tate" means "contradiction" and it is one of the most famous japanese idioms.

これは、高精度な機能を機械同士や、あるいは名人と言われている人と競わせるもので、理系出身でエンジニアの私は、結構、楽しく見ていました。

This program showed us a duel of more than two sophisticated machines or "the master" of a field each other. From the view of the science and engineering major, I enjoyed this program as

"just an entertained TV program"

ですけどね。

だって、対決方法のルールの決め方が変なのです。

I thought that the duel rules were funny.

例えば、

―― この金庫を10分で破ったら、金庫破りのプロの勝ち、そうでなれば、金庫の製造者の勝ち

"If the master can break the safe in ten min., the master win the duel. if not the producer of the safe win the duel"

―― この高性能ドリルで、この超硬化合金を、30分以内に貫けたら、ドリルの勝ち。貫けなかったら合金の勝ち

"If this sophisticated drill can penetrate the super-alloy panel in 30 min., the drill wins. If not, the panel wins"

『一体、どういう基準で、その「10分」や「30分」を決めたの？』

"Who decides the "10 min." or "30 min." from what kind of standard" ?

って、思いませんか？

その時間を、半分にしたり2倍にしたら、勝者と敗者が、簡単にひっくり返るんですよね。

If the time is changed half or twice, the winner and loser can change easily.

そういう根拠の理由を欠いたものを、『勝負』とは言わないでしょう。

という話を、中1の娘に喋ったら、

という目で見られました。
