By the way, the reason why the US had sprayed the toxic chemicals from airplanes, was a threat of reprisal from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics(USSR), (Russia, in present)
あの頃は、米軍がベトナムで核兵器を使用したら、ソ連(今のロシア)が、核爆弾を搭載した爆撃機をワシントンに飛来させられる状況にあったからです(*)。
At that time, if the US used atomic weapons in Viet Nam, the USSR could make bombing planes come flying to Washington, DC.
(*)ICBM(大陸間弾道ミサイル)もあったようですが、当時は、戦略爆撃機がメインに考えられていたようです(米軍の北爆の開始が1964年)。
(*)Though both nations had intercontinental ballistic missiles(ICBM) in those days, strategic bombers might have been main weapons.

掃討作戦開始 ――
An exterminatory operation has started.
まずは、西側の庭(全体の1/4くらいの面積)から作戦を開始しました。
At first, I got to work on the west area of the garden( a quarter area) .
オーソドックスに、除草をした後に、土壌に日光を届かなくする除草シート(黒のビニールシート)を敷設して、さらにその上に砂利(ジャリ)200kgをばら撒きました。
Normally, I spread a black weedkilling sheet on the garden which could cut rays of the sun, and threw gravels, whose total weight was about 200kg, on the sheet.
太陽光線が届かない土壌にしてしまえば、どんな植物だって生えてくることはできません。
Any weed cannot come out on the soil that is covered to protect from the light.
土壌を汚染しない、エコな「枯葉作戦」です。
This is ecological dead plant operation, without soil pollution.
問題は、200kgの砂利の運搬の方でした。
The problem was to how to carry the 200kg gravels.
20kg入りの袋を10個購入して、この一つ一つを抱き抱えながら詰み込み、自動車で運びましたが、「腰」をやられないか、ヒヤヒヤしながらの作業でした。
I bought ten of 20kg gravels package, and I carried in and out the car with getting my arms. I was always worried about my "strained back".
200kgの砂利でも、高々5m^2の土地の埋め尽すことができず、唖然としました。
However, I was surprised that even 200kg gravels could not bridge the five square meter.
ですので、この実家での「枯葉作戦」、5ヶ年計画くらいの長いスパンで、ノンビリとやっていくことにしました。
So I decided to keep this operation about for five years freely.

まあ、例え5年間かかったとしても ―― ベトナム戦争(*)よりはずっと短い。
Even if five years are needed, it is shorted than the period of Vietnam War.
(*)諸説あるが、ここでは、1955年11月1日～1975年4月30日の20年間の説を採る。米国の完敗で終結。
(*)I adopt "for 20 years" from Nov.1st, 1995 to April 30th, 1975. Complete defeat of the US.
